Governor Scott Walker has proclaimed May 2013, as Building Safety Month throughout Wisconsin. The proclamation recognizes that countless lives have been saved due to the implementation of safety codes by local and state agencies. The Alliance for Regulatory Coordination requested the proclamation. Building Safety Month is sponsored each year by the International Code Council. This year’s theme is “Code Officials Keep You Safe”.

In his proclamation the Governor recognizes the efforts of building safety officials and fire prevention officials, as well as the work of architects, engineers, builders, laborers, and others in the construction industry “who work year round to ensure the construction of safe buildings”. Also recognized are “the dedicated members of the International Code Council who develop and implement the highest-quality codes to protect our citizens in the buildings where we live, learn, work, worship, play, and visit”.

Wisconsin has traditionally been a national leader in building code implementation. In 1913 Wisconsin became the second state in the country, behind only the State of New York, to implement a state-wide building code for public buildings and places of employment.
